  1. Spring Fresh

    April 14, 2014 by michaelpenneystyle

    What a lovely Spring morning!

I couldn’t help but open the kitchen window to let in some fresh Spring air and to hear the birds chirping.  The scent from this bouquet of stocks (from my new Pineapple Street shop!) is intoxicating and all the more lovely in this vintage milk glass vase.

Hope your day is Spring fresh too!

  2. Introducing Sweet Violet, Bed Bath & Baby

    April 11, 2014 by michaelpenneystyle

Now that you’ve seen Pineapple Street inside and out, here’s a tour of Sweet Violet – located directly across the street!  It definitely makes it worth the trip downtown and let me tell you that there are other shops popping and perking up around downtown too.  I think this is the start of something great.

Sweet Violet isn’t (as some people have wondered) just kids and baby items.  Its roughly 1/3 bedding, 1/3 bath items and 1/3 baby.  So even if you don’t have a little one in your life, there’s still more than half the shop to peruse.

Sweet Violet was born out of  frustration with fining beautiful bed linens at reasonable prices in the area.  The department stores are either a snooze fest of beige or loud and brash prints that don’t make for a very elegant bedroom.  I wanted to offer classic and beautiful bedding that can be mixed and matched to create your own signature collection.

There are simple basics – like a great white box pleated bed skirt, sheets and towels – along with specialty items like robin’s egg printed shams and unique vintage-inspired quilts, French soaps and sea sponges.

Then there’s the spool style or Jenny Lind crib!  This is exactly what Sara and I were after for our daughter’s nursery and couldn’t find!  We were able to track down a company who makes new Jenny Lind cribs in classic white and brought them in.  They’re timeless, charming and best of all affordable!  They’re only  $325 which is much less than I see at baby boutiques out there or Restoration Hardware/Pottery Barn and even akin to prices you’ll find at places like Sears.

Sweet Violet and the famous Jenny Lind Crib!

Some people are a little confused about these cribs because they’ve heard they were recalled in Canada.  To be clear, the Jenny Lind crib is a style not a brand.  There are other brands like Da Vinci that have made Jenny Lind style cribs, some with drop-sides, that have been recalled.  The Sweet Violet Jenny Lind crib is not from one of these brands and meets all Canadian safety requirements.  It is not a drop sided crib and is brand-spankin-new (i.e. not an antique death-trap!).

Screen Shot 2014-04-11 at 9.29.38 AM

Besides the cribs there are beautiful customizable gliders that are clean lined and elegant (with ottomans available too) or comfy arm chairs to curl up in with a good story book/novel.  We’ve got the cutest stuffed animals around and some hot air balloons and mobiles you won’t find anywhere.

So all in all, Sweet Violet is a pretty magical place and you need to visit soon!

  5. Introducing Pineapple Street – Decor Flowers Gifts

    April 7, 2014 by michaelpenneystyle

Thank you to everyone who made it out the Grand Opening this past weekend of Pineapple Street and Sweet Violet in Downtown Whitby.  This has been a very late spring and it even snowed a little in the morning but soon the sun came out and so did all of you!

We were run off our feet at Pineapple Street, Sweet Violet and Penney & Company!  I am so grateful to each of you for your support and enthusiasm and I hope that what we’ve begun just continues to grow and bloom into a thriving, culture-filled downtown.  A place where we all want to be and brings pride to our town.

Thank you again and now here’s a tour of Pineapple Street for those of you have yet to make it out.

Judging from the constant line ups at the shop on Saturday, it seems Pineapple Street has something for everyone (hungry husbands included since we carry delicious gourmet foods like killer bbq sauces).

    So here it is everybody!

  9. Cover Girl Cobi!

    April 1, 2014 by michaelpenneystyle

If you live in Toronto’s West End be sure to pick up a copy of Good Life Mississauga Magazine for a wonderful cover story on my friend and mentor Cobi Ladner.  As you may have read here before, Cobi was my very first boss out of school at Canadian House & Home Magazine where she was the long-time, much-loved editor in chief.

Cobi of course has gone on to found and head Cobistyle – her lifestyle brand that encompasses furniture, fabrics, accessories, and most recently a nation-wide line of home goods at Sears.  I’ve been seeing some of her newest spring goodies for Sears (think cheerful outdoor plates, glasses and accessories) on social media and need to get out to my local Sears to check them out!

Some of Cobi’s new items at Sears

These cheerful green gingham melamine plates with scalloped edge are so preppy and perfect for Spring!

And this bedding ensemble inspired by classic Blue Willow china would look wonderful in so many spaces!

Above you see Cobi surrounded by a selection of Cobistyle items from a photo shoot I was honoured to style recently.  So nice to see it grace the cover and so nice to see Cobi looking so great and full of life, in charge of her destiny and loving every minute!

    Way to go Cobi!

  10. Martha By Mail Ribbon for New Shop!

    March 31, 2014 by michaelpenneystyle

Some of you will remember Martha By Mail.

It was the mail order branch of Martha Stewart Living – a catalogue full of the most beautiful and well-crafted items, many of which were hard or impossible for the average reader to find locally.  In response to the demand for such goods, the Martha Stewart team created the merchandise business that is sorely missed today.  I still have a catalogue or two from the good old days and flip through it for inspiration from time to time.

Well I recently became the proud owner of some of the original ribbon and seam binding from Martha By Mail’s original supplier who is based right here in Oshawa Ontario!  Yes indeed I was treated to the purchase of some custom-dyed-for-Martha ribbon that will soon be available for purchase as part of our gift wrap/cards section at Pineapple Street.  Supply is very limited so keep an eye out for it.

I was also able to buy the very last Martha By Mail ribbon sorter too!  Originally an idea in the pages of the magazine, the ribbon sorter was a DIY project that was translated into merchandise for the brand.  The idea still appears on marthastewart.com today and looks like this.

Well here’s the one I was able to snag and will be part of the store at Pineapple Street when we open on Saturday April 5th.  Thank you to Steven for the ribbon and sorter and thank you to Martha By Mail for all of the inspiration!
