Fresh New Year, Fresh New Downton!

January 7, 2014 by michaelpenneystyle

Happy New Year readers!  I’m so thrilled to be back here with you, ringing in 2014 and ready to roll up my sleeves for a year full of new projects and exciting decorating adventures.

We’ve had a lovely Christmas holiday our little clan of three, and hope you’ve had a nice rest too.  I spent a little time in the shop today by myself putting away Christmas things and planning for the next season.  Can’t wait to bring them to fruition to share with all of you!

With this fresh new year comes fresh new drama and inspiration from the new season of Downton Abbey which Sara and I watched last night.  A two hour premier was just what we needed.  I love the story lines and characters, but most of all I love the Abbey itself!  Glorious reception rooms like the one above are scene stealers of course (just can’t get over that dowdy yet daring colour combo) but I have a soft spot for Downton Abbey’s putty painted and copper festooned kitchen.  It sets my imagination soaring each and every time.  You might even notice my growing copper collection in the kitchen at Penney & Cocoincidence?

I just love the time-worn utilitarian nature of this space and the earthy, humble objects (check out the Downton-style items from Design Sponge above).  It’s everything I could ask for in a kitchen and more and I can’t wait to watch the whole season and revisit my favourite kitchen again and again.

So here’s to a new year – let’s dust off the cobwebs and get inspired!

Happy New Year Michael! I think we all love Downton and the “look”. I have lots of bopper in my kitchen and several pieces of my great grandmother’s yellow ware. Such treasures that never go out of style.

  2. Happy New Year Michael! I watched it as well – big fan (although really miss Matthew.) Hope to come in to the store again soon. All the best.

  3. The premiere of season 4 had over 10 million viewers! It’s the kitchen I wait to see of all the Downton Abbey rooms – freezing the frame to take in all of the details. I love when there’s puddings or rising bread in the bowls sitting on the rough table and the big copper kettles are steaming on the stove top for tea.

The wind is howling outside my window as I write this note but there’s a fire in my hearth and heart. Happy New Year Michael..

Happy New Year to you and your family Michael! Look forward to visiting the store soon for some winter/spring pick-me-ups!!

I scored Seasons 1-3 of Downton Abbey on Amazon before Christmas for the lovely price of $24.99. My husband and I planning a marathon month of after dinner television pleasure, having never seen the show but having heard so much from folks like you. Can’t wait! Happy New Year!

Happy New Year. Can’t say I watch the series but will keep a lookout. I noticed we already have similar featured kitchen items. I love earthy time worn colors with lots of bright and functional pieces due to space restrictions. My family and friends appreciate great tea towels from your shop too! All the best for 2014, sounds exciting!

  7. Here’s another show that inspires via it’s sets. We binge-watched ‘House Of Cards’ over the holidays (first season) and Netflix is launching the full second season on Feb. 14th. The sets are NYC urban/industrial loft and Washington town homes. The palette is purposely black, charcoal, cream, steel blues, grey, white and navy. Even the fashion was designed to reflect the dark and guarded Washington politics and diabolical, compelling characters. I stop frame all the time to look at the details – (especially including Robin Wright’s clothes and hair). If you don’t have Netflix, get it, because ‘House of Cards’ is so worth the small, monthly fee. Okay, I’m admitting to also binge-watching ‘Breaking Bad’ (all 5 seasons) and ‘Orange is the New Black’ (first season) but only because I’ve been house bound with this hideous bronchial infection! Thank-you Netflix!!
