2013 Midcentury Modern at West Elm

January 18, 2013 by admin

Of course we all know there’s something in the water that’s making everyone fall for midcentury modern design these days…And not just in the funky retro teak credenza type of way.  In the sleek, cool, off-beat colour combination kind of way.  Think Mad Men and the mix and match pieces of J.Crew and now think West Elm Spring 2013.  They’ve introduced a gorgeous midcentury modern collection and now everyone can have a piece of this glamorous cool style.

Mad Men’s incomparable style…

J.Crew’s classic vintage pieces mixed in modern ways and with modern colours…

And here’s West Elm Spring 2013…

And on a side note, this all reminds me a lot of a certain dresser at Penney & CO…Great minds think alike!  See what I mean???  Available at Penney & Company!

  1. Michael, I’m not a big chain store shopper, but I did purchase the side tables pictured with with the wingback chair. Have to say….I prefer your mid-century chest! I’ll be in Toronto next week, and I hope to be able to visit your shop. Have a good weekend!

  2. Alex says:

Well some of us DON’T shop at US retailers that mass merchandise mono culture. Thankfully were raised in families that instilled creative expression, and individual development. There are so many wonderful shops across Canada that can and do reflect their own style and have the confidence to do so.
Penney & Co reflects this as well.

So for those who do love Mid-Century design, enjoy it!
However for those of us who only see our parents basements… and remember this was the “ikea” disposable furniture of its day that was child friendly.

Please believe if you love it and want a favorite colour, lamp, etc in your home, buy it! I remember this favorite quote from Judy Garland ” Be a first rate version of yourself, not a second rate version of someone else”. Amen!

    Have a great weekend.
    Alexandra :)

  3. Pat Nayar says:

Midcentury design brought simplicity, clarity, clean funcionality. All nonsense removed. I’m trying to re-create the era in our club meeting room using the lived-in pieces. We’ve got lots of memorabilia and now looking for some period furniture. I browse second hand and vintage stores in Toronto regularly but 60′s furniture is not such an easy find. Any advice here?

  4. Cathy says:

Yeah for the small(fantastic) Canadian stores….thank you Michael.
