Dazzling Dahlias

September 19, 2012 by admin

This past weekend Sara displayed some beautiful fall blossoms in Penney & Company beaker vases.  They got lots of oohs and ahhhs but many people didn’t know what type of flowers they were.

They were in fact dazzling dahlias -one of my favourite flowers and if you’re not acquainted with them, I want to share them with you here.

I feel like when people are asked what their favourite flower is nowadays, they are getting better at moving beyond Rose or Daisy and have included Peony in that list.  While peonies are one of my ultimate favourite blooms, I think it’s time more people knew about dahlias too!  So here they are in all their late summer/autumn glory.

Get to know ‘em, buy them at the flower shop, and maybe plant some in your garden next spring!

See – what’s not to love?  They’re in season now, so bring some into your home today!

    Beautiful flowers and photography.

You didn’t mention the fact that they can be dug up in the fall and replanted in the spring. Another reason to live dahlias.

    • Too true Susan! Sort of like tulips and daffodils in that you plant a bulb (rhizome) but you do it in spring and take them out in the fall since they won’t survive the winter the way spring bulbs do. They’re great to plant with kids because they can see the amazing transformation from an ugly potato-like rhizome to a beautiful flower!

Gorgeous flowers! You’ll have to visit the Mendocino Botanical Gardens, it overlooks the Pacific & is a wonderland of beauty. They grow dahlias the size of dinner plates- I’ve never seen such huge ones.
Mendocino is a piece of New England on the CA coast; it was the backdrop for “Murder, She Wrote”, the Angela Lansbury series. Truly lovely town situated on bluffs overlooking the ocean. For a Maine lover like you it would be a perfect fit!

Dahlias were coveted by Coco Chanel who famously incorporated them into her signature designs. I just love dahlias and anything Chanel!!
