Classic Martha – Potted Citrus

January 31, 2011 by admin

This one is dedicated to my friend, mentor, colleague, Hilary Smyth.  She is the world’s number one enthusiast when it comes to potted citrus trees for their casual European flair.  Plus, as she points out, they add an air of freshness and sunshine all winter long.  A huge bonus when the snow is piled up outside!

Enjoy these sunny, citrus-y images on a brand new Monday morning!

I love this post and have been dreaming of growing either oranges or lemons indoors. So fresh, so beautiful. Has anyone tried it? The results?

    • Yes, you can grow them inside all winter – I’m not an expert on what they like best, but Hilary has grown hers inside and had great success. Maybe google it or ask your local garden centre/florist who might sell them. Maybe like a Sheridan Nurseries sort of place where they have expert employees.

      Good luck Carey!

Very fresh and beautiful, but how do we grow this fine thing? I have a friend in Victoria who has just grown her first lemon in her cold frame, but I can’t imagine that anything like that is possible here in the GTA. Do they over-winter indoors by a sunny window?

    • Yes, I think they’re an inside plant here in Toronto – maybe they’re fine outside during the summer, but the idea of this Martha story is to have them inside. It was a February issue, so it’s all about potted indoor plants that take away the winter blahs…
